[tweetmeme]I’m often asked: can you get business or a job by being active on Twitter? Well, here is your answer. Don’t think the CBS network didn’t take into consideration Kutcher’s 6,728,979 followers on Twitter plus his Facebook friends in signing the actor as the new star of the hit sitcom “Two and a Half Men.”
So the actor got his job with help of his social media star power. Next, he will have to lure them to the showand keep them watching.
The News Went Viral
Kutcher threw out his first hint with this widely-reported tweet @aplusk: “what’s the square root of 6.25″ from his Twitter account. The answer, of course, is 2.5. Then he tossed a bouquet to his predecessor Charlie Sheen (3 million+ followers). “#2.5 @charliesheen Thank man. Always been a fan, always will be! BTW you were “born big,” which of course was retweeted by millions of his followers.
Nice going, Ashton! More PR. (By the way there are also Twitter accounts that report on the star such as @AshtonNews).
“Ashton is a pop culture triple threat-film star, cutting-edge producer and a social media pioneer,” said Nina Tassler, President, CBS Entertainment, in a CBS news release. Twitter Erupts Over Ashton Kutcher Joining ‘Two and a Half Men’ said the.
Kutcher immediately became a Twitter trending topic. Another Twitter account, @AshtonNews, not related to the star, weighed in with tweets linking to stories in other news outlets, sending the news spiraling throughout the internet.
In his first tweet since the official announcement, Kutcher said, “Thank you for all the Congrats on 2.5. Met with the team this morning…. We are already working on earning your Laughter.” He’s no dope. He’s on the case and, like the Pied Piper, will no doubt enlist his millions of fans to follow his show.
Power Up Your Twitter Presence
So, you might say, I’m not a star who can command a huge following. But you can tweet regularly and begin to build your own following. For mere mortals, and not pop stars, the goal is to make meaningful connections. Start following people and you will begin to build your own cadre of followers.
Seek out those you would like to meet. Start a conversation with tweeps (Twitter-speak for mutual followers) that could lead to your getting or referring business. Join Twitter conversations.
I wrote about how to power up your Twitter presence in a recent post, Oops! I Should Have Said That on Twitter in which I listed a few simple tips to make you stand out. Take a page from Ashton Kutcher’s book and start tweeting and connecting with other tweeters.
